Monthly Membership Meeting
May 2 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Our guest speaker is Jamie Aquino, President/Founder of Haiti Ocean Project.
Haiti Ocean Project is a 501c3 nonprofit marine conservation organization, based in Petite Riviere de Nippes, a rural fishing village in Haiti. Since 2007, Haiti Ocean Project has been empowering and educating youth, fishermen and the communities that reside along the Canal De La Gonave, to gain a deeper understanding and dedication to protection of their marine environment. Of all the marine life in Haitian waters, sea turtles, in addition to marine mammals, sharks and stingrays, are the priority. Jamie is a co-country coordinator in Haiti for WIDECAST (Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network) and working to develop Haiti’s first sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation center. A former high school Journalism/English teacher, Jamie was inspired by her former Haitian-American students help Haiti’s marine life. Before she took an interest in Haiti, Jamie initiated an awareness campaign called Pier2Pier, focusing on Florida’s wild dolphins and manatees. Pier2Pier was designed to motivate and excite her former students to take an interest in the ocean environment around them and the valuable species that reside in it. A native Floridian, Jamie grew up in Miami and has always loved the ocean, so it was natural for her to eventually dedicate her life to marine conservation.
Jamie has requested a list of critical items she needs for their fishermen, who help them protect Haiti’s sea turtles:
1. Saltwater fishing line (any length, any pound)
2. Saltwater fishing hooks (any size, any style)
3. Fishing pliers
4. Filet knives
4. Bait buckets
5. Solar lanterns
6. Baseball hats
If anyone would like to help with Haiti Ocean Project, please bring any of the items listed above to the meeting, to pass them along to Jamie.
