Celebrating All Things STPS – Our Logo
Editor’s Note: During the month of May, we’re celebrating “All Things STPS” to commemorate our 38th anniversary on May 6th. Let’s take a quick look at all the different logos we’ve had over the years.
Vintage STPS
Our “vintage” logo made its debut on the cover of the July 1995 edition of the STPS Turtle Talk Newsletter. Years later in 2021, we celebrated our 35th anniversary and revived our original logo to create a “35th Anniversary Shirt” which you can get at the STPS Gift Shop. Hidden in the STPS Archives
When STPS created our STPS Turtle Talk Newsletter over 30 years ago, it was typed up on recycled paper and mailed out via the U.S. Post Office to all our members. Nowadays, the newsletter and other STPS communications are distributed via email. But we still have copies of all our old newsletters. Not only do they show how much we’ve grown over the years, but also provide unique insights into the early days of STPS.
If you look at the Summer, Fall and Winter 2000 editions of our newsletter, you’ll see something different on the front covers. It’s not our original logo or our current one, but a design by Dave Cromwell who was an STPS board member at the time. See our “lost” logo above. What a fun find!
Our Current Logo – Designed by Dawn Witherington
When the millennium arrived in 2000, STPS underwent some changes. First, we moved our website to its current location www.SeaTurtleSpaceCoast.org. Then, in 2001, we decided that we needed a new logo and asked Dawn Witherington, graphic design artist and scientific illustrator, to design it. The result is a logo that we are still using today more than 20 years later.
Dawn’s website Drawn by Dawn illustrates the vast scope of her work. In addition to designing logos for STPS, Inwater Research Group, Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, and other organizations, Dawn creates educational displays, scientific illustrations, life history posters, habitat illustrations, and greeting cards. She’s also known for the books she’s co-authored with her husband Blair Witherington including: Florida’s Living Beaches, Florida’s Seashells, and the Gold Medal award-winning Our Sea Turtles.
Dawn and Blair are Honorary Lifetime members of STPS. You can find their books at the STPS Gift Shop as well as t-shirts, mugs and lots of other items with the STPS logo.
