Celebrating World Sea Turtle Day

It’s June, and that means it’s time to celebrate sea turtles. World Sea Turtle Day is June 16, but one day is just not enough. Join the Sea Turtle Preservation Society as we enjoy a turtley awesome month filled with games and activities, presentations, open house events and an online auction.
STPS will kick off the celebration beginning on World Ocean Day, June 8, and continue through the month of June. One highlight of the month will be World Sea Turtle Day, June 16, as STPS celebrates renowned sea turtle conservationist Archie Carr’s birthday.
“Brevard County provides critical nesting habitat for several species of sea turtles, and World Sea Turtle Day gives us an opportunity to learn more about these endangered species that share our beaches and what we can do to protect them,” said Susan Skinner, Sea Turtle Preservation Society board chair. “We invite the community to join us at both of our locations to be part of this special event.”
The Turtle House, 111 S. Miramar Ave. in Indialantic, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 12. The event will feature educational activities and games, both indoors and outdoors, and in-store specials at the gift shop.
Join STPS and do your part to help sea turtles survive by participating in a special beach cleanup from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, in Indialantic as well. Stop by the front of Turtle House to get started cleaning up the beach.
Special activities also are planned at the Turtle House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16.
The Turtle Nest kiosk at Port Canaveral will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19. The event will feature raffles and in-store merchandise specials.
Educational presentations, story times, fundraising activities, and an online auction also are planned throughout the month. The online auction runs from June 8-16 and features a variety of items, including sea turtle artwork, jewelry, and attraction tickets. Funds raised will support local sea turtle conservation programs. To view auction items or participate, please visit the website: https://m.charityauctionstoday.com/m/auctions/21455

For the second year, STPS also will be part of a larger celebration, Sea Turtle Week 2021. More than 160 groups from around the world come together to share the message of sea turtle conservation. Daily themes throughout the virtual event will focus on different sea turtle species as well as conservation issues. Learn more at seaturtleweek.com.
