In Triple Digits

It has been an exciting week for our STPS nest surveyors. Not only did the teams pass the 100-nest mark, volunteers also recorded the first green sea turtle nest of the season. As of June 6, STPS teams have counted 135 nests: 133 loggerheads, 1 green, and 1 leatherback.
Everyone can do their part to make this year’s nesting season a success by keeping our beaches clean, flat, and dark for sea turtles. Filling in holes and knocking down sandcastles as well as taking all beach furniture and trash when you leave helps make the beach a suitable nesting habitat. Remember sea turtles dig the dark, and from May 1 through Oct. 31 no visible lights are allowed on Brevard County beaches. This includes flashlights and cellphones.
