New nesting numbers

This year’s sea turtle nesting season has gotten off to a fast start for loggerheads in our survey area. As of July 2, our STPS nesting survey volunteers have recorded 100 more nests in our survey area than our total for the entire 2018 season. We also finally have our first green sea turtle nest of the season.
On June 30, our nesting survey totals were 347 loggerhead nests, three leatherback nests and one green nest. We now also have nests that are hatching, so please continue to keep the beach clean, dark, and flat for both nesting mothers and hatchlings.
During sea turtle nesting season, our volunteers are on the beach each morning at sunrise. Teams will continue to monitor our survey area in Cocoa Beach daily throughout the season, and we will post regular updates on nesting numbers.
